Two years ago, Jennie Boyd Bull survived Hurricane Helene in Yancey County.
That day, over 30 inches of rain poured down on the community, and on the mountain where Bull was living, a log slide was triggered, sending countless trees into her home, knocking it from its foundation.
Bull’s home was lodged into her car she had moved just minutes before the log slide hit her house. Shortly after, three of her neighbors rushed to save Bull, and her cat, Lilly.
Recently, Bull wrote a poem about her Helene survival story in a collection from Helene survivors titled “Had I a Dove: Appalachian Poets on the Helene Flood.”
