Congresswoman Deborah Ross on Monday spoke out against Duke Energy’s request for an 18% rate hike, criticizing the energy giant for trying to raise prices on already-struggling North Carolina households.
The company argued for an 18% increase in energy prices before the North Carolina Utilities Commission, a hike that could add $34 per month to monthly power bills for Duke’s customers by 2028.
“These changes mean families in western North Carolina who are still rebuilding after Hurricane Helene are struggling to heat their homes in the winter and early spring. Seniors on the coast will not be able to stay cool during the brutal summer heat,” Ross said at a press conference in Raleigh.
