The White House is branding its new research policy “Gold Standard Science” — promising more transparent, reproducible, and trustworthy government-funded research.
Rep. Deborah Ross says she isn’t buying the branding.
Ross said this week that a proposed Office of Management and Budget (OMB) rule would do the opposite: hand political appointees the power to override scientists’ own merit-based funding decisions. Behind the “gold standard” name, she warns, is a policy that could gut research integrity — and hand America’s scientific edge to rivals like China and Europe.
