Former Gov. Roy Cooper, who’s running for the US Senate, points out that many in North Carolina won’t feel the pain of Republicans’ federal Medicaid cuts until after this fall’s election.
On Jan. 1, new work requirements for Medicaid enrollees will go into effect.
The vast majority of people under 65 who are on Medicaid are already working, but work requirements tend to cause huge drops in the number of people who get the health insurance program.
Republicans are counting on people losing Medicaid in order to pay for the GOP and President Trump’s tax cuts, which disproportionately benefit the wealthy and large corporations.
Here’s what Cooper had to say about that.
Cooper spoke with Cardinal & Pine recently about the 2026 elections, North Carolina’s affordability crisis, and more. For the full conversation with Cooper—as well as NC Supreme Court Justice Anita Earls—tap here.
