Three Charlotte police officers resign after allegedly sending racist texts about Black residents

Three Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police officers have resigned following an internal investigation that allegedly uncovered a racist text thread about Black residents.

Six individuals were involved in the group text chain, which included a contest over who could pull over the most Black drivers.

The messages also reportedly included the use of the “N-word” in references to using force against and shooting Black residents.

According to Charlotte Police Chief Estella Patterson, six officers were involved, and an independent chain-of-command board has unanimously recommended termination for the three other officers who had not yet resigned.

Here’s what Patterson had to say about the scandal.
