Rep. Beth Helfrich is a rising star among North Carolina Democrats. She’s a state lawmaker representing a NC House district that serves Davidson, a small town north of Charlotte.
In her first term, Helfrich sponsored bills aimed at protecting in vitro fertilization (IVF) and contraception, as well a Democratic bill designed to create an independent redistricting commission—an attempt to limit gerrymandering.
Helfrich, a former educator, also tried to change state laws to make more legislative records available to the public, an acknowledgment of the enormous leeway lawmakers have in which documents they choose to make public.
