Cardinal & Pine spoke with Rep. Lindsay Prather, a former educator, about the pay North Carolina teachers are getting. She says they’re being tricked.

If a pay raise doesn’t match the rate of inflation, you didn’t truly get a raise.

State Rep. Lindsey Prather, a former teacher in North Carolina, says this is the reality for educators here. The Tar Heel State ranks 39th in the country for starting teacher pay, and neighboring states are taking advantage of NC Republicans’ refusal to pay more.

Prather says she has seen billboards in the Raleigh area recruiting teachers to Virginia schools at a far higher salary.

Buncombe County, which she represents in the General Assembly, is susceptible to losing teachers to Georgia, Tennessee, and South Carolina, which are all around an hour away, and pay teachers more.

Lindsey Prather knows what it’s like to be a teacher. That’s why she fights for them.
