Katie Trout is a survivor of childhood sexual abuse turned advocate for victims in North Carolina. She has helped pass bipartisan legislation to support victims and hold abusers accountable.
Now, she is speaking out against former State Rep. Sarah Stevens, the Republican nominee for the NC Supreme Court. Cardinal & Pine’s Dylan Rhoney spoke with her recently.
Trout was critical of Stevensโ opposition to a bill extending the statute of limitations for victims of childhood abuse to sue their accusers. You can find the 2019 bill here.
Trout has been featured in campaign ads criticizing Stevens. As the News & Observer reported recently, Stevens opposed making the statute of limitations 20 years for victims. She ultimately supported a bill setting the bar at 10 years.
WRAL reported Stevens was concerned that the bill would be used to make false claims against politicians and powerful people.
โAll you have to do is swear it happened,โ she said, according to WRAL. โTheyโre going to go after somebody with deep pockets.โ
Stevens is facing incumbent Supreme Court Justice Anita Earls, a longtime civil rights attorney, in this fall’s election. For more on that race, watch the video below.
