As artificial intelligence (AI) rapidly expands, workers gathered at a press conference outside the North Carolina General Assembly on July 24 to call for more protections for nurses, educators, and other workers.
Hannah Drummond, a nurse at Asheville’s Mission Hospital, is the only worker representative on the North Carolina AI Leadership Council, and the sole vote against the state’s strategic roadmap on the rollout of artificial intelligence.

She says the council’s approved recommendations don’t do enough to protect workers.
“Nurses are being forced to use unregulated and untested AI in patient care. Our employers are using both nurses and patients as guinea pigs for tech developers,” she said.
