One year after Helene devastated western North Carolina, local mayor Zeb Smathers talks about the hard road to recovery.

As North Carolina marks the one-year anniversary of Hurricane Helene, Canton Mayor Zeb Smathers told Cardinal & Pine his thoughts are with the people of western North Carolina during their ongoing recovery.

At least 108 people died during Helene, thousands of homes were destroyed, and many locals are still picking up the pieces and trying to make sense of it all.

“These men and women, of all backgrounds, all across the state, but especially western North Carolina going through this, I am just lucky to be in the trenches with them,” he said.
