I remember one mom, the mother of a messy little 3-year-old whose braids were always pinned up with a rainbow of butterfly clips, saying to me: “I just don’t have room for even one more thing.”
The North Carolina Department of Labor found conditions on the farm were harmful to workers, such as the lack of proper breaks from the heat. The Barnes Farming Corporation was initially fined more than $187,000 in 2024. However, the fine was reduced in a settlement this year to $3,750.
