Your guide to taking action in North Carolina, July 17 – July 23

This weekend, events are being held to honor the life and civil rights legacy of John Lewis. We’ve also included canvassing opportunities, rallies, and protests taking place across North Carolina.

As the midterms draw closer, there are countless opportunities to volunteer and take action in the Tar Heel State.

Six years after the passing of civil rights leader and Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.), there are events across North Carolina, honoring his legacy as well as supporting a call to action in the fight for social justice.

This weekend of action in honor of Lewis’ legacy comes at a time when the right to vote is under threat across the South.

As always, we’ve included events both in person and virtual so everyone has an opportunity to be involved.

🗓 Friday, July 17

Good Trouble Lives On: Press Conference & Rally (10:30 a.m. – noon)

Host: Indivisible CLT, Charlotte Mecklenburg NAACP, Poor People’s Campaign, Common Cause of North Carolina, The Freedom Center for Social Justice, League of Women Voters of Charlotte-Mecklenburg

Location: Pearl Street Park – Pearl Park Way & Kenilworth Avenue, Charlotte

This event, honoring the life and work of the late civil rights leader and member of Congress, John Lewis, takes place six years after his passing. The event is a call to action in the fight for social justice.

Scotland Co: Good Trouble Lives On (10 a.m. – noon)

Location: Laurinburg, address provided upon registration

In honor of John Lewis’ legacy, attendees in Laurinburg have an opportunity to register voters in Scotland County on July 18.

Wilmington Canvass for Healthcare Affordability (11 a.m. – 1 p.m.)

Host: Planned Parenthood Votes! South Atlantic

Location: Wilmington, address provided upon signup

Join Planned Parenthood to go door-to-door canvassing your neighbors in Wilmington about how healthcare affordability is impacting them.

Rage Against The Regime Gate City BLVD Edition! (11 a.m – noon)

Host: Indivisible Guilford County

Location: 3608 W Gate City Boulevard, Greensboro

Indivisible Guilford County is holding a Saturday protest in Greensboro against the Trump administration.

Winston-Salem: Good Trouble Lives On (11 a.m. – 2 p.m.)

Location: St. Paul United Methodist Church – 2400 Dellabrook Rd, Winston-Salem

Six years after the passing of John Lewis, attendees will learn how to carry on his legacy at a time when voting rights and other freedoms are under continued attack.

Flip NC Judicial Canvass (noon – 2 p.m.)

Host: Indivisible Guilford County, Flip NC

Location: 3001 Battleground Ave, Greensboro

One of the most important races on the ballot in November will be the North Carolina Supreme Court election. In Greensboro, you have an opportunity to speak with your neighbors about the court and why it matters.

Alamance Open House (1- 3 p.m.) 

Host: Down Home NC

Location: 1246 Plaza Dr, Burlington

Down Home’s Alamance County chapter is hosting their monthly open house, providing an opportunity for members of the community to learn about their work and meet their neighbors.

Boone: Good Trouble Lives On (2-3:30 p.m.)

Location: Jones House Cultural Center – 604 W King St, Boone

Attendees in Boone will learn how to carry on Lewis’ legacy at a time when voting rights and other freedoms are under continued attack.

Hickory: Good Trouble Lives On (4-7 p.m.)

Host: Indivisible Citizens of Catawba Valley

Location: Morning Star Baptist Church – 126 4th Ave SW, Hickory

Honoring John Lewis, this event will feature speakers, live music and food trucks, as well as an opportunity to learn about how everyone can carry on Congressman Lewis’ legacy.

Black Summer Outside Canvass – Durham County (4:30 – 5:30 p.m. and 5:30 – 6:30 p.m.)

Host: Advance Carolina and NC Black Alliance

Location: Durham, address provided upon registration

On Saturday, July 18, there are two different opportunities to canvass in Durham County with NC Black Alliance and Advance Carolina.

Durham: Good Trouble Lives On (6-8 p.m.)

Host: Engaged Defenders for Democracy, League of Women voters

Location: Whipporwill Park – 1632 Rowemont Dr, Durham

Attendees will learn about voter outreach as we draw closer to the midterm elections.

🗓 Sunday, July 19

Good Trouble Interfaith Townhall: A Call for Voting Rights (4-5:30 p.m.)

Location: Galilee Ministries – 3601 Central Ave, Charlotte

Day three of the weekend of action honoring the legacy of Lewis is focused on the word “preach.” This event on Sunday, July 19, is a town hall, centered around voting rights at a time when the right to vote is being threatened across the South.

Wilmington Canvass for Healthcare Affordability (11 a.m. – 1 p.m.)

Host: Planned Parenthood Votes! South Atlantic

Location: Wilmington, address provided upon signup

Join Planned Parenthood to go door-to-door canvassing your neighbors in Wilmington about how healthcare affordability is impacting them. This is a separate event from the one listed on Saturday, July 18.

Southern Sundays for Peace: Garner (1 – 2 p.m.)

Host: Engaged Defenders for Democracy

Location: US 70 & Mechanical Boulevard, Garner

Join Engaged Defenders for Democracy in Garner for their weekly pro-democracy protest. Positive signs are requested.

Southern Sundays for Peace: Creedmoor (1 – 2:30 p.m.)

Host: Engaged Defenders for Democracy 

Location: North Main Street & East Wilton Avenue, Creedmoor

You can participate in a peaceful sidewalk protest in Creedmoor on Sunday. Organizers request positive signs only. Parking is located nearby.

Behind the Scenes: NC Legislative Update (7 – 8 p.m.)

Host: Red, Wine, and Blue, Carolina Forward

Location: Virtual

Get an update on the latest happenings in North Carolina politics in this virtual event hosted by Red, Wine, and Blue and Carolina Forward.

🗓 Thursday, July 23

Freedom Rising Tour: Wilson County (6-8 p.m.)

Host: Democracy North Carolina, North Carolina NAACP, NC Black Alliance, Common Cause of North Carolina, Black Voters Matter, NC Counts Coalition

Location: Darden Alumni Center – 1600 Lipscomb Rd E, Wilson

This event is the launch of a statewide tour highlighting the attacks on voting rights and Black voters.
