Frontier Food to Go has been a Wilmington favorite for 60 years. Now, it’s earned recognition from USA TODAY for having some of the best hot dogs in the country.

The iconic red food trailer at 2633 Carolina Beach Road, and now at a new location at 1016 S. College Road, are known for window-service comfort food, especially hot dogs, and outdoor picnic tables.

Elbert Bradshaw founded the business in 1966 and a new owner, Todd Champion, took it over in 2024. From the start, though, Champion wanted to maintain the tradition that appreciated at Frontier Food to Go since he was a kid.

The restaurant was recently voted the best hot dog in the Wilmington area in a readers’ poll from the Wilmington StarNews, earning more than 45% of the votes. It’s also among those across the country mentioned in USA TODAY, including those worth a drive.

You can order hot dogs your way at Frontier Food to Go, or get it “all the way” with chili, onions, mustard and slaw for a small upcharge for a true Carolina-style dog. Among other specialties are the Champion Dog with mustard, ketchup, mayo, pickles and onions, and the Mr. Bradshaw Dog, named for the founder.
