Video: Former North Carolina police officer charged after video of violent arrest


A former Shelby police officer seen on doorbell camera repeatedly hitting a woman during an arrest has been fired, arrested, and charged with assault.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation said former officer Karson Hyder, 22, turned himself in and was charged with one count of assault inflicting serious injury.

Shelby Police Chief Brad Fraser said Hyder was terminated following an internal investigation into the incident.

The woman’s family said she is homeless, has mental health challenges, and suffered a broken nose during the encounter. Court records show she still faces one pending misdemeanor charge of breaking or entering.
