Opinion: Mark Robinson’s horrific remarks about women contradict the Christian faith

Mark Robinson has called women “whores” and “heffers,” laughed about domestic violence, and called breastfeeding mothers “shameless attention hogs.” In an op-ed, Rev. Corrine Mack highlights how Robinson’s remarks do not align with Christianity.

Our rights as women are under attack in the state of North Carolina, and across the country. 

Our right to make decisions for our bodies is at the forefront of political discourse, as the erasure of reproductive health care access increases, and conservative politicians wage a relentless assault against women’s rights and well-being.

In light of these attacks, I am reminded how the Gospels affirm women.

In the Gospels, Jesus spoke to women, offering healing, forgiveness, restoration, approval, revelation, and comfort. Indeed, Jesus went to the cross, not just for men, but without question for women as well. Even in the face of a society that sought to render women insignificant.

We even see in the Old Testament, that under the rule of a patriarchal society, women are still at times given space to lead. They participated in worship in the community (Psalm 68:25, 1 Samuel 1). This would include the public reading of scripture (Deuteronomy 29:11, 31:12), established businesses (Proverbs 31), and functioning as supreme leaders amongst the tribes of Israel (Judges 4:4). 

We know that Huldah, Deborah, and Esther as well as other women were influential advisors to men in leadership. 

God seems to Biblically validate women … and Jesus does the same. 

This begs the question, how is it that we have leaders like Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson, who claims to be Christian, yet has said such vile things about women?

Mark Robinson has referred to women as  “whores” and “heffers,” saying women shouldn’t be leaders, laughing about domestic violence, calling breastfeeding mothers “shameless attention hogs,” and defending the likes of Harvey Weinstein and Bill Cosby. Not to mention, he has shown complete disregard for a woman’s safety and health while pregnant.

Robinson has also stated he would completely ban abortion if elected governor, declaring, “If I was the governor and had a willing legislature, we could pass a bill saying you can’t have an abortion in North Carolina for any reason.”

Women have accomplished many of our dreams in America and in North Carolina. We have had multiple women serve in the general assembly, women serve as US Senators, and even a woman who served as Governor. We have knocked down so many closed doors and created greater opportunities for others, yet in the same breath, men like Robinson seek to take us backwards.

Let us remember to always be a blessing to others. As we prepare to vote in the upcoming general election in North Carolina, please think about the importance of women in our society.

The one who blesses others is abundantly blessed; those who help others are helped (Proverbs 11:25).
