Did you know this 5,946-foot landmark was inherited by a North Carolinian named Hugh Morton? 

That’s right. At one point, one of NC’s most iconic landscapes was inherited and owned by a single man.

Morton, a photographer and conservationist, turned the mountain into a nationally-known destination and his family sold it to the state after his passing in 2006.
