The second debate featured seven candidates, who combined, are trailing frontrunner Donald Trump by a whopping 17 points in the polls, making it a bit of an exercise in futility. But even if the debate is unlikely to affect the outcome of the primary, it says a lot about the state of the Republican party.

Reps. Keith Kidwell and Jeffrey McNeely disparaged Black colleagues on the House floor, with Kidwell joking that one belonged to the “church of Satan,” and McNeely suggesting another didn’t deserve to get into Harvard.

“I don’t know when I’ll see my child again after they board that plane,” Shannon Fleming writes in an op-ed. “Because of NC Republican lawmakers’ intentional and targeted hatred of the trans community, my family is being ripped apart.”
