Three people are dead after a mass shooting in the coastal North Carolina city of Southport Saturday. Here’s what we know.

Investigation continues into a mass shooting that occurred in the coastal North Carolina city of Southport on Sept. 27.

Shots fired from a boat in the Intracoastal Waterway at 9:30 p.m. resulted in several deaths and multiple injuries at a Southport bar called American Fish Company, according to Southport Police Chief Todd Coring.

As of Sept. 28, District Attorney Jon David told the Wilmington StarNews that at least one injured victim was “clinging to life” after several people were taken to area hospitals. The suspect in the shooting was arrested after fleeing up the Intracoastal Waterway toward Oak Island.

Where is Southport, NC?

Southport, a coastal city where the 2013 movie “Safe Haven” was filmed, is located roughly 30 miles from Wilmington. Censusreporter.org lists the city’s population at about 4,100 residents.

The Southport shooting took place outside the American Fish Company. A city spokesperson told the Wilmington StarNews that a boat pulled up to the restaurant dock around 9:30 p.m. on Saturday. Then, the shooter reportedly fired into the crowd before fleeing up the Intracoastal Waterway.

The suspect in the Southport shooting has been identified as Nigel Max Edge, 40, of Oak Island. He is charged with three counts of first-degree murder, five counts of attempted murder and five counts of assault with a deadly weapon, intend to kill, inflicting serious injury. Additional charges could be forthcoming.

Southport police said that Edge was apprehended after he fled on the waterway toward Oak Island. Edge was booked into the jail early Sunday morning, where he is being held with no bond in this incident.

In a news release, the city of Southport said, “there is currently no known further credible threat to the public. Officers and Deputies from multiple agencies are in place to help ensure additional security for the greater area.”

Have the Southport, NC, shooting victims been identified?

Three people were killed in the shooting and several others were injured, according to the StarNews. While names have not yet been released, coverage noted that one of the deceased victims was from California and was with their family during the shooting.

The number of people injured has not yet been confirmed, but officials said multiple people were among those taken to area hospitals. The names of victims will not be released until next of kin notifications have taken place.
