Republican infighting in Congress is blocking progress on several bipartisan priorities, including aid to Ukraine, a unified response to Hamas’ attacks in Israel, and border security, Congressman Wiley Nickel told his constituents on Tuesday. Nickel, a first-term Democrat, held a “Coffee with Your Congressman” event in Fuquay Varina to give an update on the turmoil in Washington, where a small group of House Republicans ousted their leader and are getting ready for a chaotic vote for the next one. That’s on top of the near government shutdown last week, which would have meant that 6,500 federal employees in Nickel’s district would have gone unpaid, and 49,000 veterans could have lost some benefits. Though the House voted on a temporary measure to fund the government, lawmakers are on another crash course for a potential shutdown in mid-November. The Republican squabbles add more uncertainty to the process, Nickel said. Events like this one, he told the crowd, are even more important in the face of government gridlock, he said. “I wanted to thank you for participating in Democracy,” said.
