Over his lifetime, Gregory Jones has witnessed first-hand the life-saving benefits of the federal SNAP program: as a child, as a college student, as an advocate for low-income families, and now as a caregiver for his parents and his five grandchildren.
SNAP helps low-income parents feed themselves and their children, but President Donald Trump and Republicans recently passed massive cuts to the program.
These cuts, the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina said at a press conference in Raleigh on Wednesday, will leave it unable to meet the demand of rising food insecurity in the state.
SNAP is a lifeline, Jones said at the press conference, not a luxury, and the cuts will destabilize the families, farms, rural grocery stores, and communities that depend on it.
