If you’re looking to make an impact while decluttering your home, there are many local organizations across North Carolina looking to accept clothing, shoes, furniture, and other household items to benefit communities in need.
We’ve compiled a list of six Goodwill alternatives to ensure that your donations help North Carolinians in meaningful ways.
1. Note in the Pocket – Multiple Locations
Note in the Pocket has multiple locations throughout the Research Triangle, and the organization seeks to provide clothing to underserved children and families. Note in the Pocket addresses clothing insecurity by ensuring that local families have the proper resources to have successful and happy lives. They hold pop-up shops and other events to provide services to families throughout the area.

2. Green Chair Project – Raleigh
If you have furniture taking up space in your home, the Green Chair Project would love to take it off your hands! The Green Chair Project provides resources to individuals experiencing homelessness, crisis, or disasters by donating furniture and household goods to help them create a new home. The Green Chair Project offers pick-up services and you can learn more about their acceptable donation items here.
In 2022 alone, the Green Chair team transported 2,450 furniture items across Raleigh!
3. Reconsidered Goods – Greensboro
Reconsidered Goods seeks to promote environmental awareness and creative expression across Greensboro by helping the community prioritize the arts and education. The store donates materials and diverts them to artists, teachers, children, and other makers who can make something new. This isn’t your typical thrift store, so their focus is on items that can be revitalized into art.

4. Mega-thrift – Winston-Salem
Mega-thrift has two locations, and they prioritize quality and designer labels. At 42,000 square feet, they are one of the largest thrift stores in the triad.
They accept clothing, shoes, children’s items, and housewares.
5. Hope Chest – Leland
By donating to Hope Chest in Leland, you can help support a domestic violence program. All proceeds support domestic violence victims.
They regularly have sales and they offer pick-up services for your donations. Learn more here.
6. Durham Rescue Mission – Durham

Founded in 1974, the Durham Rescue Mission helps support families throughout Durham, Raleigh, and Chapel Hill. They are the oldest homeless shelter in Durham, and their thrift stores help maintain their mission.
