The 32nd annual North Carolina Paramedic Competition will take place on Sunday, April 28 at the Joseph S. Koury Convention Center in Greensboro. Six teams across the state, including reigning champions Pender EMS, will compete for the title of Top Paramedic Team during the annual NC Emergency Medical Services Expo.

Competing against Pender EMS will be five regional champion teams, including Cape Fear Valley LifeLINK Air, Harnett County EMS, and two teams from Mecklenburg EMS and Surry County Emergency Services. These teams previously won their respective regional competitions held in March in Brunswick, Catawba, Cumberland, Johnston, and Surry counties.
As part of the 49th annual N.C. Emergency Medical Services Expo, which runs from Friday, April 26, through Wednesday, May 1, each team will be brought out of sequestration to respond to a secret scenario in front of their peers in a ballroom setting. The scenarios are carefully designed by the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Emergency Medical Services staff, in collaboration with the competition’s medical director, Dr. Bryan B. Kitch.

Teams are judged on professionalism, communication, patient rapport, conduct, attitude, appearance and attire by a panel of emergency medical services professionals from North and South Carolina. The competition serves not only as a judgement of skills, but also as a valuable training opportunity for both the competing teams and the observers.
The winning team, decided by the panel of judges, will be revealed on Tuesday night, April 30, at the Emergency Medical Services Expo awards banquet.
The annual competition is co-sponsored by NCDHHS, the N.C. College of Emergency Physicians and participating community colleges to improve responses to emergencies and disasters through fostering emergency medical systems, trauma systems, and credentialed EMS personnel.
