June 20, 2023

If you’re currently a student at Duke University who calls North Carolina or South Carolina home, here’s some good news: The Durham university announced Tuesday that it will provide local undergraduate students whose family income totals $150,000 or less with “full tuition grants.”

According to WRAL News, grants will officially go into effect “in the fall 2023 semester.” The university also announced that any student from NC or SC with a family income of $65,000 or less will receive additional financial support in the form of meals, housing, and course materials, among other benefits. Per the university, this support will be provided “without the need for student loans.”

Freshmen, sophomore, junior, and senior undergraduate students from North Carolina and South Carolina may qualify for the opportunity. According to Duke, these students “will receive financial aid statements by July 1 that reflect the new commitment.”

The Dean of Trinity College of Arts & Sciences, Gary Bennett, spoke with WRAL News about the decision. “Attending college can expand a family’s opportunities for generations, and we aim to make the Duke experience as widely accessible as we can,” Bennett said.

Forbes noted that around 340 students at Duke University can expect to receive benefits through this new program.
