The Republican nominee for attorney general isn’t retracting his support for the embattled gubernatorial candidate. Bishop has in the past described Robinson as “groundbreaking” and “the most formidable candidate [he’s] ever seen in North Carolina.”
It didn’t take long for me to be forced to grow up. On August 16, 2023, just a year and a half after the passage of Florida’s ‘Don’t Say LGBTQ’ law, three bills targeting LGBTQ youth were enacted in North Carolina.

Bishop’s record of hostility towards LGBTQ people goes beyond HB 2 and his comments comparing them to the Taliban. As a member of the Mecklenburg County Commission in 2012, Bishop opposed a non-discrimination proposal for LGBTQ people, saying it was “either a political stunt or a serious dagger at the heart of marriage.”
When we talk about representation, it's not just about having a seat at the table; it's about the real impact we can make through our work. Having LGBTQ+ members and allies in our legislature means we can sponsor legislation that could truly impact our community.
Unfortunately, the only blame for this lies squarely on the Republican Party stoking those fears and fanning the metaphorical flames of discontent across North Carolina. Conversations that could have once found common ground are more commonly filled with accusations and screaming matches, and somehow, this is supposed to be acceptable to the folks who live here.
