Stacey Park Milbern, raised in Fort Bragg (now known as Fort Liberty), began advocating for disability justice and civil rights when she was 16.

In North Carolina, she and other advocates pushed the state to include disability history in the high school curriculum. She became a national figure and, in 2014, President Obama appointed her to his administration’s Committee for People with Intellectual Disabilities.

The American Women Quarters program is honoring her memory with a special edition 25-cent piece. In 2025 (the fourth and final year of the program), the U.S. Mint will release a quarter with the likeness of Milbern celebrating her impact.

She developed the menu with First Lady Jill Biden to serve at the White House State Dinner with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.
