A new list of six “idyllic small towns” in North Carolina included several in the state’s western region.

Founded in 1994 by cartographer John Moen and his wife, Chris Woolwine-Moen, WorldAtlas publishes educational materials and articles on geography, sociology, demography, environment, economics, politics, and travel.

The Citizen Times has previously covered numerous mentions of western NC from WorldAtlas, including “unpretentious” towns, scenic drives, a favorite downtown area, and more. The new list, published Feb. 17, 2026, honors local values: walkability, access to water and trails, preserved historic districts, and more.

Here’s what WorldAtlas said about each of its WNC suggestions, plus the complete list and more.

What to do in Blowing Rock, NC

Known for its beautiful views, hiking paths, and spectacular autumn colors, Blowing Rock was the first WNC location on the new WorldAtlas list. While the list names towns that best serve their locals, it also provides details on places to visit for each, including:

  • Blowing Rock’s Main Street, known for seasonal events, a shopping district, and a “rustic charm blended with sophistication”
  • Moses H. Cone Memorial Park, named after Moses Cone, who is known for his work in textiles and conservationism, a property that includes a large main historic house, 25 miles of paths, and a spot for local artists to show their crafts
  • The Botanical Gardens at Appalachian State University, located a short drive from Blowing Rock, are described as a “quiet haven filled with both local and unusual plants”

What to do in Saluda, NC

The second WNC location on the WorldAtlas list is Saluda, a town rumored to be named after a Native American chief’s last words, and tucked away in the Blue Ridge Mountains. WorldAtlas writers suggested the following locations during a visit to Saluda:

  • Green River, a spot known for excellent tubing, paddling, and swimming
  • Saluda’s town center, which is perfect for shopping, dining at locally-owned restaurants, or just taking a stroll
  • Pace’s General Store, a historic shop originally opened in the 1800s, which WorldAtlas describes as feeling “exactly how one might imagine a store from the turn of the last century”
  • The Saluda Arts Festival, an event where the town’s “idyllic, cultural spirit truly shines,” where visitors can find local artists displaying their creations
