Some pastors and NC churches say they’re stepping up to protect local immigrants from ICE and Border Patrol raids.
Rev. Joel Simpson of Taylorsville’s First United Methodist Church has taken part in an effort by pastors and churches in North Carolina to protect local immigrant communities in light of ICE and Border Patrol operations in the state.
Part of their effort has been to train community members to support their neighbors if ICE activity occurs.

Simpson expressed his opposition to immigration agencies taking action on church property and detaining people who are attending worship services.
“To see people arrested and people taken, and fear created in a space that’s supposed to create safety, is not only inhumane, not only wrong, it is also a violation of this freedom of worship,” he said.
