Despite public opposition, NC Republicans vote to gerrymander the state’s Congressional map—minimizing the power of Black voters in eastern NC almost certainly ousting eastern NC Democrat Don Davis.
The North Carolina House on Wednesday voted to enact a new Congressional map that, on President Trump’s orders, seeks to help Republicans maintain control of the US House in the 2026 midterms.
All Democrats voted against it.
The NC Senate passed the map on Tuesday, and since redistricting legislation cannot be vetoed by the governor, the maps are now the maps, barring any court rulings.
During the debate over the bill on the NC House floor, several Democrats noted the maps were drawn without the district’s input and without listening to the general public, who by wide margins oppose political gerrymandering.
The House received more than 12,800 comments urging the legislature not to do what the legislature ultimately did.
@cardinalandpine The new Congressional election map drawn by NC Republicans will kick an incumbent Democrat out of his district to help President Trump and Congressional Republicans maintain control of the US House in 2026. At a large protest outside the General Assembly on Tuesday, NC Sen. Sydney Batch, the Democratic minority leader, said that intentionally diluting the Democratic vote was the only way NC Republicans could stay in power.
