The Tar Heel State has beautiful mountains, beaches, and a boatload of personality. Good call, America.
North Carolina is the 5th best state in the nation, according to a recent poll by the London-based research group, YouGov.
Borrowing from the spirit of March Madness, over 1,200 Americans were asked to choose between two states in a series of head-to-head matchups.

States were rated based on their “win percentage” which is how often that state won their head-to-head matchup. North Carolina won 61.3% of their matchups, a smidge lower than Nevada (61.4%) and quite a bit higher than Florida (60.7%).
Hawaii (69%), Virginia (64.1%), and Colorado (65.4%) took the top three spots in the rankings.
While this data doesn’t specify which states the voters were from, there’s a possibility that a large portion either consider NC their home state or are currently living here.
Prior to the survey, respondents were asked where they were from and where they are living currently. YouGov reports that Americans picked their home state to win 77% of the time. Additionally, respondents living outside their home state chose the state they were currently living in 79% of the time it was shown.
Here’s how some people reacted to NC getting the 5th spot:
