North Carolina’s Congressional delegation will include five Democrats in the US House of Representative, according to Election Day results.
When North Carolina went into this election, there was something pretty off about its Congressional delegation.
It didn’t reflect the fact this is one very split state when it comes to political persuasions.
The state is famously, stubbornly purple. Democratic governor, Republican-led legislature. Obama in 2008, Trump in 2016.
But the way the state’s Congressional election worked out swerved from that pattern, with just three Democrats among the state 13 US House members, and two Republican Senators. (And of the 13 Congressional members, just two women).
But that changed Tuesday night.
There are now five Democrats and eight Republicans who won Congressional seats and will be headed to Washington in January. The realignment came after a panel of NC judges found in 2019 that the state’s Republican-led legislature illegally tweaked and gerrymandered the Congressional district to Republican’s favor.
Here’s the initial results of Tuesday’s election, with 97% of the state’s Election Day precincts in and 5.5 million ballots counted by the State Board of Elections as of 11:15 p.m.
· Incumbent G.K. Butterfield (D) over Sandy Smith (R) in US House District 1

· Incumbent Greg Murphy (R) over Daryl Farrow (D), US House District 3
· Incumbent David Price (D) over Robert Thomas (R), US House District 4

The high-profile US Senate Race between Republican Thom Tillis and Democrat Cal Cunningham remained too close to call Tuesday night.
