Patrick McHenry, the bowtied Republican who for nearly 20 years has represented nine North Carolina counties in the US Congress, will not be seeking re-election, he announced on Tuesday.
“This is not a decision I come to lightly, but I believe there is a season for everything and—for me—this season has come to an end.”
He will finish his current term.
McHenry served as House speaker for three weeks this fall after the far-right wing of his party forced out Kevin McCarthy. In that time, he presided over the resultant chaos—watching as the party failed to agree upon a new speaker over several rounds of voting—and gained notoriety for slamming the speaker’s gavel down in frustration.
Despite the rocky final months, McHenry downplayed the current turmoil as a reason for deciding not to run again.

“There has been a great deal of handwringing and ink spilled about the future of this institution because some—like me—have decided to leave. Those concerns are exaggerated. I’ve seen a lot of change over twenty years. I truly feel this institution is on the verge of the next great turn.”

Spindale and Rutherfordton, North Carolina, sister towns in rural Western North Carolina, received a joint $20 million RAISE grant in 2022 to transform the congested, crumbling, dangerous thoroughfare between them into a pedestrian friendly “complete street.”
The grant, part of the Biden Administration’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, will help make it easier for pedestrians to cross busy streets, add benches and flowers, connect two major greenway biking paths, ease traffic patterns, improve emergency response time, build electric vehicle infrastructure, revitalize the sidewalks and public transit spaces, and draw more visitors to local businesses.
In short, it’s a big deal.

Members of the United Auto Workers have officially ratified new contracts with all of the Big Three automakers, finalizing raises of at least 25% over 4 ½ years — and even bigger gains of up to 160% for the lowest-paid workers, ensuring that they will earn over $40 an hour by the end of the contract.
Those raises represent some of the biggest wins for organized labor in decades, and President Joe Biden on Monday celebrated the UAW’s contracts as a huge win for workers.
“These historic contracts reward the autoworkers who have sacrificed so much with record raises, more paid leave, greater retirement security, and more rights and respect at work,” Biden said in a statement.
The UAW’s deals with the Big Three have also led to other, non-union car companies to announce their own raises for employees, presumably to avoid unionization efforts at their own plants and factories.
“The UAW is fighting hard to ensure that all auto jobs are good, middle-class jobs – and I stand with them in that fight,” Biden added.

Tentative agreements reached between the United Auto Workers (UAW) union and the Detroit Three automakers are “changing the face of the country,” President Joe Biden told auto workers at a soon-to-reopen automotive assembly plant in Belvidere, Illinois on Thursday.
“Wall Street didn’t build America. The middle class built America, and unions built the middle class,” Biden said to the enthusiastic audience. “The automakers are doing incredibly well, so the autoworkers should be doing incredibly well as well. … In the end, the deal you reached set a new standard.”
