Biden’s promise to boost rural infrastructure meets a real test in Sampson County. The eastern NC county is beset by pollution from hog farms, industrial operations, and one of the “most pressing environmental and public health concerns in the modern world.”
In North Carolina, $8.4 billion in funding has been announced, with over 300 specific infrastructure projects identified for funding. Nearly $6 billion will go to transit upgrades, and another $469 million for clean water and water infrastructure.
The Town of Nashville will use a $1.3 million grant to construct a new fire station, as the current one is shared with the police force and lacks adequate space. The new station will be constructed on a 4.5-acre site on the east side of town, providing expanded services to 5,352 citizens and reducing response times.
"If I’m checking a bank account or sending an email, my husband can’t look up a dinner recipe or read the news," Weaverville resident Sally Weldon writes in an op-ed.
This funding’s aim is to help connect the estimated 8.5 million families and small businesses nationwide that still haven’t been able to access the full capabilities of modern technology.
