It’s Friday, which means it’s time for our Good News Friday roundup of the fun news in North Carolina.
America’s Best Bed and Breakfasts
On Aug. 18, USA Today released their Readers’ Choice Award for the best bed and breakfasts in the country. North Carolina’s rich history, Southern hospitality, and knack for delicious food skyrocketed not one, but two (!!) BnBs to the top of the list.
Greensboro’s Historic Magnolia House secured spot #10 for USA Today’s readers. Their menu draws from the 50s and 60s, and their four rooms are inspired by past guests like Jackie Robinson, Tina Turner, and Carter G. Woodson. They are one of the only Green Book sites still open in North Carolina.
Green Book sites are locations mentioned in The Green Book, a travel guide that listed safe places for Black travelers to stay during the Jim Crow era of the mid-twentieth century.
Wilmington’s CW Worth House was the #1 choice of bed and breakfasts in America! The inn boasts seven rooms, farm-to-table dining, and exceptional service. It is the longest-running bed and breakfast in Historic Wilmington and invites all visitors to explore the beauty of the port city.

NC Freedom Park Officially Opens
Just in time for the weekend, Freedom Park in downtown Raleigh is officially open!
The park has been a long time in the making and honors the experience of the Black community in North Carolina, and centers the 40-foot-tall Beacon of Freedom.
Freedom Park sits on an acre of land and it is the perfect place to enjoy a picnic, read a book, and hang out with family and friends.
You Can Help Protect Democracy
If you’re tuned in to our award-winning newsletter you may have seen headlines that cause concern for the state of voting in North Carolina.
However, that doesn’t mean we come without solutions and ways you can be involved in protecting our democracy! One way you can help is by becoming a poll worker at North Carolina’s voting sites.
The NC Board of Elections is now accepting applications. Not only do poll workers get paid, they serve their communities by setting up voting equipment, checking in voters, and assisting voters with special needs.

A Funny Tribute to International Vulture Day
We all know someone who rocks the bald look. My dad is one of them and so is Mr. Clean. The Carolina Raptor Center (CRC) also recognizes this, and is celebrating International Vulture Day on Sept. 2 from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.
For an added twist, bald visitors receive free admission!
Vultures may get a bad rap, but according to the CRC, they are nature’s “ultimate cleanup crew.” They prevent the spread of disease, reduce the spread of infection, and mak
e our environment a cleaner and healthier place.
The Carolina Raptor Center has been doing conservation work for birds of prey since 1981 and can’t wait to celebrate this special day with North Carolina!
