Black History Month may be coming to a close, but we’re continuing to highlight Black-owned businesses across North Carolina, with a deep dive into the food scene in the Piedmont Triad.

High Point, Greensboro, and Winston-Salem create a region in North Carolina known as the Piedmont Triad. They’re the three largest cities in the northern-central area of the state and have some pretty great food options. 

Here’s our list of must-try Black-owned restaurants and drink stops to keep in mind for your next visit or when you need to answer “what should I get to eat?”.

Kim’s Kafe

5 stars all-around for this mother-daughter restaurant specializing in classic southern soul food. Whether you’re looking for a date night, family dinner, or a new place to frequent, Kim’s Kafe is dedicated to bringing you delicious food in an intimate environment.  

Monk’s Cheesesteaks & Cheeseburgers 

Catch American favorites like cheeseburgers, wings, chili cheese fries, and of course, cheesesteaks, at Monk’s Cheesesteaks and Cheeseburgers. You can find them at their brick and mortar in Greensboro or their food truck

Vivián Joiner and Stephanie Tyson combine their years of experience in the food industry into “unique, southern inspired uptown, down-home cooking.” Sweet Potatoes has an award-winning menu and features fried green tomatoes, chicken and waffles, sweet potato cornbread, and a cocktail list to go along with your meal. 

Forsyth Seafood Market & Cafe

This seafood is FRESH. Stop in for lunch and leave with the catch of the day at the Forsyth Seafood Market and Café. They also offer everything from catfish and wild salmon to crabcakes and oysters, and you can order dinner entrees, combos, a family pack, and even sandwiches.

Daniel Gray’s from-scratch cheesecake recipe took two years to perfect, and has been turned into over 73 flavors to choose from. Everything is made the way you like it (i.e. you customize the crust, filling, and toppings). 

Damn Good Dogs

Damn Good Dogs started as a food truck and now has a physical location at the Stock + Grain Assembly Food Hall. They serve custom made hotdogs like the Carolina (chili, coleslaw, mustard, and onions), Philly Dog (caramelized peppers and onions, cheese sauce, seasoned philly steak), and even a vegan sausage dog option! 

Pop’s Mini Donuts

Pop’s Mini Donuts is also located in the Stock + Grain Assembly Food Hall. They used to frequent food truck festivals in the area and now they’re the perfect dessert to pair with Damn Good Dogs. They’ve got classic donuts (cinnamon sugar, iced, powdered sugar), specialties (like strawberry shortcake, maple bacon, and southern comfort), and if you’re looking to go even sweeter, grab one of their ice cream specials!

Miss Johnnie Mae’s

Otis Battles Jr. opened Miss Johnnie Mae’s food truck to honor his late grandmother and memorialize her recipes. The local favorite is a fusion of Soul, Caribbean, and Cajun cuisine and features dishes like dirty rice (beef or pork), jerk chicken pasta, oxtails with gravy (in bulk), desserts like rum pound cake, cinnamon honey bun pound cake, and peach cobbler.
