It’s the last weekend in January, and if you’re looking for a fun way to end the month, here a few things you can check out in Charlotte, Raleigh, and elsewhere.
Blowing Rock WinterFest: Now through Jan. 29
Welcome to the annual celebration of Blowing Rock WinterFest, where for four days you can fill your agenda with WinterDuck Derbies, tomahawk throwing competitions, a polar bear plunge, light festivals, a pancake breakfast, and so much more. Founded in 1998, this festival is all about the fun side of winter and has donated thousands of dollars to charitable causes. The town has even been celebrated as one of America’s “Prettiest Winter Towns” by Travel & Leisure magazine.
Chinese New Year Festival (Raleigh): Jan. 28
Join thousands of others to celebrate the Chinese New Year on Saturday from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. at the Dorton Arena (NC State Fairgrounds). It’s the Year of the Rabbit and the Triangle Area Chinese American Society is welcoming everyone to enjoy performances, food, and family-friendly activities! Tickets are $7 in advance and $10 at the door.
Rainbow Rave (Winston-Salem): Jan. 28
Show out on the dance floor at the Rainbow Rave on Jan. 28 from 8:30 p.m. to 2:30 a.m. at the Millennium Center. This is an 18+ underground dance event celebrating dance, music, art, and the queer community. There will be light shows, art installations, a lineup of DJs and performers, and drinks for those who are 21+. Everyone (18+) is welcome, discrimination is not tolerated, and if you cannot afford the ticket, administrators will help you find a way to attend.
Frankie Zombie Solo Art Experience (Charlotte): Jan. 28
Charlotte-based artist Frankie Zombie will debut his first solo show for one night only in Camp North End. The artist will use the backs of 18 models as a canvas for his paintings to symbolize his start as an artist when he couldn’t afford to buy canvas. Tickets are $100 and include food from James Beard Award nominated chef Sam Hart. (Think like the Oscars of the cooking world). Doors open at 5:45 p.m., and photos will be on sale for $222 per print.
Charlotte Hornets v. Miami Heat (Charlotte): Jan. 29
The Charlotte Hornets and Miami Heat are playing at the Charlotte Spectrum Center this Sunday at 1 p.m. You can enjoy the game with family and friends and then wander around Charlotte to experience the vibrant food scene.
