Baby casting call! The award-winning NC Lost Colony play is back in Manteo for the summer and they need their Virginia Dare!

The NC Lost Colony play, which retells the story of the first attempt to plant an English colony in the Americas, has a unique tradition of real babies stealing the spotlight in the role of Virginia Dare — the first English child born in the “New World.”

Before her birthday on Aug. 18,  “The Lost Colony” producers invite babies from the community to try out for the role rather than using the usual blanket-swaddled prop.

The play has been ongoing since 1937, and this year it’s celebrating its 86th anniversary and Virginia Dare’s 436th birthday.

“Virginia Dare Babies” have the chance to nab the role with their charming personalities this weekend on Saturday, July 22 at 10 a.m. in the Lost Colony Admin Building.

In addition to having a calm and cheerful personality, all auditioning babies should be 15 pounds or less.
