Supreme Court Kills Trump’s Bid To End DACA

The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that DACA will remain intact. Here’s what this means for the lives of the 650,000 young immigrants awaiting this decision.

The United States Supreme Court decided today that an estimated 690,000 to 800,000 Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) beneficiaries will be safe from deportation. The decision was written by Chief Justice John Roberts.

“We do not decide whether DACA or its rescission are sound policies,” Roberts wrote. “We address only whether the agency complied with the procedural requirement that it provide a reasoned explanation for its action. Here the agency failed to consider the conspicuous issues of whether to retain forbearance and what if anything to do about the hardship to DACA recipients.” The Department of Homeland Security can try again, he wrote.

WATCH: What is Like Being a DREAMER Waiting for the SCOTUS DACA Decision

Seven months ago, the waiting began for DREAMers nationwide. It was then, back in November, that the U.S. Supreme Court heard arguments about the legalities of DACA. But really, the waiting has been much longer than that. DACA beneficiaries have been waiting to know the fate of their lives ever since Donald Trump became president. One minute he supports DREAMers, the next he’s against them.

Trump has yet to respond to the decision.
